Grain Supply Chain Benchmarking Studies
Part 3 - Central Storage and Handling of Grain – Performance Indicators Benchmarking Report
The central storage and handling benchmarking study looks at key physical aspects and performance dimensions of the Australian central grain storage and handling system. The relative performance strengths and weaknesses are analysed.
History
This seminal benchmarking study of central system grain storage and handling was released by the AWB in 1996. The Operations policy group led the study with Grant McDougall being the chief researcher and primary author. Gordon Rodger provided significant input as well. The cooperation of all the five mainland state bulk grain handling organizations was a vital element in undertaking the study. This was the last of the major benchmarking studies undertaken by my group at the AWB.
Methodologies were further refined for this study. Core data tables were assembled for each of the five states together with a national summary. Core data was grouped under “inputs” and “outputs” for each system – basically this is what economists refer to as “factors of production”. All graphs and ratios were derived from these input and output numbers.
