Grain Supply Chain Benchmarking Studies
Part 2 - Rail Transport of Grain – Performance Indicators Benchmarking Report
The rail benchmarking study looks at key physical aspects and performance dimensions of grain transport by rail in Australia and in selected area of North America. The relative performance strengths and weaknesses are analysed.
History
This major benchmarking study of bulk grain transport by rail was completed and released by the AWB in 1994. The Operations Policy group was responsible for the concept development, data research, analysis and presentation of the many factors and performance measures that comprise the final report. Gordon Rodger was the chief researcher and primary author, with additional input provided by Rob Allen. The process and outcomes were validated by extensive cooperation and investment of time, patience, data and resources by major industry participants.
The study benchmarked not only the Australian state based rail sectors, but also included three international rail organisations that saw advantage in cooperating in this benchmarking endeavor. The report was released in April 19994 and remains a “benchmark” of international rail benchmarking studies in the area of bulk grain transport. The core data tables took a year to develop in terms of information acquisition. These core data tables in turn drive all of the graphs and ratios in the report.
